Blog EntryHeat sink sunk, double/duel core and normalacyJul 3, '07 12:36 AM
for everyone
I thought I would write some about this subject solely because ,while I am not an expert, I can give some references that might help the next person who is absolutely desperate to figure out what is happening to their new computer and why it won't settle down and become stable. Please understand I am just a 55 year old woman and I don't know all the jargon ! But this is what we learned.
My husband's new computer has as its heart the P5N32-E S\ SLI motherboard (ASUS) It has two CPU(s) that is now called duel or double core ( a little confused by this terminology. )This is his new motherboard - impressive? yep
Another site that goes into deeply into the details.
Our Memory is Patriot memory. Their website is here...
One of the great problems of this era's computers is the problem of speed vs. heat vs. more memory vs. more speed.... we need a new quantum jump in technology or we will be stuck with this speed of CPU for a generation - I like the crystal memory/ grown diamond CPU's concept though I do not know if it is practical or even possible.
It is a complex machine and I am a humble woman - but I know how to do research. Now lets try to explain what was going wrong. He figured out how to get the new drivers for the Hard Drive downloaded (there were references to that problem on the net.) at the right second while loading Windows (our first challenge with this computer. ) My honey was going to use fans alone for the new machine though we have been using liquid cooling for quite a while. Koollance is a fine computer cooling system though our model is a bit older model, here is their website.
Leon and I have never really had much trouble with cooling our computers, it rarely gets hot here and when it does we usually just turn our machines off because we do not have air conditioning. Usually our liquid cooling system has worked perfectly and a combination of fans and liquid works even better.
Heat can be death for a computer, in case you missed that class in computers 101 !!!
OK - we stabilized the computer after our first set of problems were solved and Leon pretty much built his system - ie. downloading all the software he wanted to have on the computer but it started to either freeze in place or to reboot itself, very close to constantly. For a long time neither of us was really sure what was wrong. We wondered if we didn't have the voltage set correctly and we reset it several more times but at the end we were absolutely sure it was not software and we knew that we had put our hardware together correctly. We considered the possibility that our operating system had been damaged and we reloaded it. We put the liquid cooling system on the computer the day before we figured out the problem. I kept checking the net for information.
Below is the discussion that caused Leon to check the temperature of the heat sinks on the board; they were so hot when he touched them that he was actually burned.
This conversation gave us the hint that pointed us to the incredible heat & its significance.
Now the heat sink is those pretty copper arty pieces that surround the CPU - they are supposed to conduct the heat away from the precious hardware so it can dissipate correctly. When we took the fans out of the computer and built the liquid cooling system it limited the air (flow) movement in the case causing the heat problem to worsen.
So what did we do to resolve this problem - we gathered up what ever fans we had and wired them up to the computer, literally wiring them to the frame in one place. We placed some fans in the back of the computer, also. The system stabilized and is now operating satisfactory.
I hope this will help someone who is searching the net for information. I know I am not an expert - but I hope I have pointed you in the right direction and your computer will soon be humming along ! In the long run, by the way, we are going to place a extra radiator on the computer - I am not too sure where or how it will operate but it will be part of the liquid cooling system and will assure a nice COOL computer.
Well, I know this is of little interest to most of you but If someone is banging their head against their monitor screen, well, lets help them and ease their suffering. Hope this helps someone!!
